Geography is a subject that teaches students about the world we all live in. It teaches students about events in both the natural and human worlds and how these two worlds are interlinked. It has an important role to play in developing an understanding of key global issues and helping students understand that there are a variety of perspectives from which these issues can be viewed. Geography, therefore, has important links to citizenship – we are all global citizens, with responsibilities to the planet and to each other.

What skills will pupils develop?

Pupils will build on their knowledge of globes, maps and atlases and apply and develop this knowledge routinely in the classroom and in the field. They will interpret Ordnance Survey maps in the classroom and the field, including using grid references and scale, topographical and other thematic mapping, and aerial and satellite photographs. They will use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to view, analyse and interpret places and data. They will use fieldwork in contrasting locations to collect, analyse and draw conclusions from geographical data, using multiple sources of increasingly complex information.

  • All pupils must be ready to learn, be respectful to all people and engage in independent research

KS3 Course Structure

We study a wide range of topics during Year 7 and 8 which introduce pupils to key themes linked to GCSE Geography. Within these key topics, we study important physical and human geography themes such as development and trade; population and settlement, rivers, coasts, ecosystems, weather and climate and sustainability. We also develop the student’s geographical skills.

The Year 7 programme of study starts off with the ‘Geography Superheroes’ where we study key geographical skills. This then leads onto urban issues, coasts, weather and climate and the development gap.

In Year 8, we broaden the students’ knowledge of more complex issues by studying the risky world, tropical areas and rivers and flooding.

In Year 9, all pupils begin their AQA Geography GCSE course in preparation for Year 10 and 11. Topics include earthquakes, volcanoes, tropical storms, tropical rainforests, hot deserts and urban areas. Pupils who opt for GCSE geography will continue with this course in Year 10.

KS3 Assessment

Pupils are tested three times a year in the form of GCSE style exam papers which are marked by class teachers. Pupils will also sit an end of year mock examination.

KS4 Course Structure

AQA Geography GCSE

Unit 1 – Living With the Physical Environment (35%)

Unit 2 – Challenge in the Human Environment (35%)

Unit 3 – Geographical Applications (30%)

Physical Fieldwork: investigating river processes at Cardingmill Valley, Shropshire.

Human Fieldwork: investigation of redevelopment in Birmingham.

KS4 Assessment

Opportunities out of lessons

We value the importance of fieldwork and take as many opportunities as possible to take the students out of the classroom to explore different environments. In Year 7, pupils complete an investigation into traffic in urban areas, in Year 8 pupils investigate river processes with a visit to Sherbrook Valley, Cannock Chase and in Year 9 pupils visit the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham.
