Assessment Only Route (AOR for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS))

If you’re interested in becoming a teacher, hold a degree and have teaching experience in two different schools this could be the route for you. We work in conjunction with local Universities to offer a Secondary Assessment Only Route to Qualified Teacher Status.

The route is aimed at teachers who are highly experienced but without QTS, therefore you will already be employed as an Unqualified Teacher and can demonstrate meeting all of the Teachers’ Standards without the need for further training. This Assessment-Only Route to QTS is available to teachers with more than two years of teaching experience, who have not previously undergone formal teacher training. Therefore, all potential candidates will have worked as an Unqualified Teacher for a minimum of two years and must have taught in at least two schools. It is essential that candidates are able to demonstrate a breadth and variety of experience in both schools across the age ranges for assessment. As well as having undertaken all of the duties and responsibilities that would be expected of a teacher to enable them to meet all of the Teachers’ Standards. This includes; the planning, delivery, leading of learning and assessment of students across the ability and age range. Unfortunately Cover Supervisor or Teaching Assistant roles would not enable a candidate to demonstrate all of the Teachers’ Standards.

The assessment period typically takes 12 weeks and usually commences in either September or January following an initial assessment in which there will be an interview in front of a panel comprised of University Tutors and the school’s senior leadership team. Interviews are currently conducted throughout the academic year. All candidates must have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and Mathematics.

Qualifications

All candidates will require two years (minimum) experience of teaching as an Unqualified Teacher

There is no statutory requirement for secondary applicants to have a degree in a specified subject, as long as they meet all of the Teachers’ Standards, including those that relate to subject and curriculum knowledge.

Original certificates are required to confirm qualifications at interview.

Please give the name and address of two referees. Referees are required to comment on your academic suitability for your selected course of study. Applications without references will not be considered.

First Referee – This should be a professional reference from the school that will support your Assessment Only Route to Qualified Teacher Status.

Second Referee – This should be a professional reference from another school where you have had experience. This would normally be a less formal response commenting on your personal or professional attributes – one side of A4 is sufficient.

Key Features

The route consists of three assessment processes:

  • An assessment of your application.
  • An Initial Assessment Day to judge whether you are likely to meet the Teachers’ Standards within a maximum 12-week period without further training.
  • A Final Assessment Day, within the 12-week period, to determine your success.

The Assessor will interview you, hold meetings with your line manager or subject mentor and conduct lesson observations. They will scrutinise your planning, marking, report writing and record of professional development.

This route is completed in no longer than 3 calendar months from the registered start date. Where a candidate fails to meet a provider’s reasonable expectation of providing evidence for assessment within the 3-month period, or where assessment determines that the candidate does not fully meet the Teachers’ Standards, the candidate is deemed to have failed the route.

Candidates will be required to present evidence against all of the Teachers’ Standards from their teaching experience. Folders of evidence will be presented, further evidence will be assessed through interviews, observations and discussions.

Candidates completing this route will gain QTS which will allow them to teach in maintained schools in England with greater opportunities for career development.
